Bad Lead: "Americans' shrinking appetite for gasoline could lead to delays in some Clark County road projects."
This is a bad lead because it is a generality.
Good Lead: "Clark County's wages are slowly catching up to the Portland-area average, according to figures released Thursday by the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis."
This is a good hard news lead because it gives the what, where and the who along with proper date usage all in one concise sentence.
Both articles found on the front page of today's Columbian.

I agree with you on the bad lead. Plus I think that "shrinking appitite" is sort of a cliche.
The good lead fits all of the "good lead" criteria and such but it seems pretty long to me - it doesn't spark much of my personal interest.

I also agree with you that this was a bad because I didn't know Americans were hungry for gasoline...
And I agree that this is a good lead because of the proper W's and it's relivant.
